E for Eucalyptus

The Eucalyptus genus has over seven hundred species. It was important for me to tell you that, as I’m still shocked by how big it is. Only a truly obsessed maniac would try to get a bonsai of every species there is, as that would take years and lots of money to achieve. Now that I think of it, that’s just the crazy type of challenge I like! Challenge accepted! Who’s with me?

On a serious note, the Eucalyptus is part of the Myrtle family and is found in many countries worldwide. Another name for most of the species is gum tree, especially in Australia. You probably recognize the name from the adorable koala bears that love to feed on the leaves. Fortunately, they make beautiful bonsais with their bright flowers and deep green foliage. They’re also easy to maintain.

It would have been easy to put Elm under E for my list of bonsai trees, but I saved that genus for a later letter in the alphabet (you’ll have to wait a bit longer). The reason I picked Eucalyptus is that I grew one from seed a few years ago. Sadly, the drought we have four years ago killed it and many of my other bonsais. So, this slide is made in memory of it. I think I’ve mourned it enough and can try again.
